'JERUSALEM – Israel's prime minister said Monday that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was embarrassed by orders to abstain from voting last week on a U.N. truce resolution for Gaza that she helped arrange.

'Israel had argued that the Security Council measure calling for a halt to the Gaza fighting — which passed Thursday in a 14-0 vote with the U.S. abstaining — was unworkable because it did not guarantee Israel's security.

'Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he called President George W. Bush to seek an abstention from the U.S., a key Israeli ally at the United Nations.

"I said: 'Get me President Bush on the phone,'" Olmert said in a speech in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon. "They said he was in the middle of giving a speech in Philadelphia. I said I didn't care: 'I need to talk to him now.' He got off the podium and spoke to me."

The Israeli Prime Minister has enough clout that he ORDERED the US President to stop a speech to take his phone call??

And then the Israeli Prime Minister arranged through the US President that the US Secretary of State would not vote on a resolution SHE HELPED DRAFT!!!

Any Americans with any sense find this weird to say the least? Read this and the article above twice.....

Man we got a bright bunch on Yahoo tonight.

The United States Ambassador votes in General Assembly except for when the Secretary of State attends instead.

Yes it is disconcerting.... and everyone who has posted so far has neglected to respond to that part of your question.

The most important part of this text is that Olmert ordered the president... like an underling.

Leave it to cons to distract and evade.

"He have been given off the rostrum and spoke to me" does no longer inevitably propose Bush stopped his speech. If he had completed what you're implying, have faith me, the media could have been throughout it. it may desire to be examine that Bush finished the speech, have been given off the rostrum, and spoke to Olmert. BTW...Wasn't this a secure practices Council project? if so, the absention is incomprehensible. the U. S. have a veto interior the secure practices Council. interior the popular assembly, the U. S. absention is exceedingly plenty meaningless.

The Secretary of State doesn't vote at the UN. I don't know where yahoo got their news but, come on, that's basic civics.
