I recently changed my address from a home address to a PO BOX. I have put in a request for the Post Office to forward all my mail from my old address to the PO BOX. I read somewhere that the Post Office can not forward information from Banks, Is this true?

Looking for someone with real knowledge on this.

Thanks alot!

I have real knowledge, been carrying mail for 32 years.

With a few exceptions, all 1st class mail, Priority Mail, Certified Mail, Registered Mail and Express Mail is forwarded. However, all but the 1st class and Certified are rarely forwarded. These are usually something you ordered, and you're going to give them your current address.

These types of mail are forwarded at no cost to you for one year. After that, the pieces are returned to the sender along with your new address, so they can correct their records. After 18 months, it all goes back as 'Undeliverable'.

The exceptions: Any piece of mail that bears a sender endorsement instructing us of how they want that piece handled. Any piece that says 'Address Service Requested' will be sent to you, the sender will receive your new address info for a fee. If it says 'Return Service Requested', you will not get it. It goes back to the sender along with your new address. The sender is not charged for this, but must pay new postage to send out another piece to your new address. Banks do often use this service, but there is no rule that says bank information cannot be forwarded.

It's been years since I've seen anything marked 'Do Not Forward'. It's not used anymore.

Periodicals (what used to be called 2nd Class, or magazines and newspapers) are forwarded, at no cost to you, for 60 days. Carriers no longer do the actual forwarding of mail. We return to the office every afternoon with mail that can't be delivered for some reason, and any mail that is to be forwarded is separated out and put in trays. It goes off at the end of the day to the Central Forwarding Section, where all of this mail is processed. By the end of the 60 days, CFS is supposed to have notified the publisher of the move so that these pubs get sent to the right place (something you should be doing anyway).

Parcel Post packages are a different animal. Everyone knows it's the cheapest way to ship a package, except when it isn't. When it isn't is when one has to be forwarded outside of the local delivery area. This is not free. It will be forwarded to the new address, Postage Due, for the full cost of the original postage. If it costs $15 to send a very heavy large item that would've cost $30 Priority, you have to pay the $15 when it comes to your new address, or you can refuse it, and the sender has to pay the $15 if they want it back. The same applies to Media Mail (formerly Book Rate). This won't apply if you stayed in the same town.

Certain bulk-rate advertising mail may be forwarded if the sender requests it and pays for the service. Otherwise it is discarded, or returned to the sender upon request and payment of the fee.

The best way to have everything go smoothly is to notify everyone that sends you mail, ASAP, of your new address. It's hard to remember all of them. I tell everyone that's moving away, or moving onto my route, that every piece they get with the forwarding sticker on it is someone they need to contact. Every piece that goes back into the system costs us extra processing work that we get no extra money for (except the small number of fee endorsements), and every piece that has to be handled a second time is a piece that something can happen to. It most often doesn't, but it makes life easier for everyone, us and you, if you see that your mail is sent to the right place the first time.

From the United States Postal Service:

First-Class Mail® and Priority Mail®

First-Class Mail and Priority Mail service is forwarded for 12 months, at no charge, as long as the sender did not place a non-forwarding endorsement on the mailpiece

During months 13-18, the mail is returned to sender with the new address

After 18 months, the mail is simply returned to the sender

Express Mail®

When forwarded, Express Mail service receives the same expedited treatment as before; however, the delivery guarantee is void

Express Mail is forwarded for 12 months as long as the sender did not place a non-forwarding endorsement on the mailpiece

During months 13-18, the mail is returned to sender with the new address

Periodicals

Magazines and newspapers are forwarded for 60 days, at no charge

After 60 days, the Computerized Forwarding System (CFS) will handle the periodical based on the type of COA the customer has on file:

Temporary COA - Periodicals will be disposed of

Permanent COA - Periodicals are returned to sender with the new address

Accountable mail

Accountable mail can be forwarded when a COA is on file, but the delivery guarantee is voided for these mail pieces

Standard Mail®

Standard Mail, such as mail-order merchandise under 1 pound, circulars, and catalogs are forwarded only with special endorsements from the mailer

Package Services and Commercial Parcel Select

Package Service Mail (includes Parcel Post, Library Mail, Bound Printed Matter, Media Mail), with no endorsement, is forwarded locally for 12 months at no charge. Additional forwarding charges are paid by you if you move outside the local area (includes packages weighing 16 ounces or more not mailed as Priority Mail service).

International Mail

Express Mail service, Periodicals, Package Services, and Standard Mail items are not forwarded internationally. In addition, First-Class Mail and Priority Mail service items that contain a non-forwarding endorsement or appear to contain merchandise are not forwarded internationally.

First-Class Mail, Priority Mail cards, and unregistered letters are forwarded internationally, for 12 months, as long as both of the following conditions are met:

The mailpiece does not contain a non-forwarding endorsement

The mailpiece does not appear to contain merchandise

A temporary COA forwards mail for 6 month intervals, not to exceed 1 year

The Post Office™ will advise publishers of a customer’s new address

All international mail that is not forwarded will be treated as RTS (returned to sender) or waste, depending on the class of mail

Your magazines and catalogs are not forwarded. Even though you make out a change of address form for the post office, you still need to contact everyone you get mail from, or even those that you might get mail from. Employers, banks, credit card companies, utilities, all companies you do business with and receive a bill. Hospital, doctors, dentists, health, house, and car insurance companies, voter registration, IRS, DMV, school officials, lawn workers, auto mechanics, the list goes on and on. Just everyone.

they can forward all mail unless it says, "Do Not Forward". Official govt mail is usually marked that way
