Liberals, how come Chris Matthews' statement wasn't racist?

After an Obama speech, Chris Matthews said, "I forgot he was black tonight for an hour." Was that not racist? Was it not a racist comment because that man is a liberal? If a conservative had said it would it be a racist comment?

I think it was very racist and very few news channels have covered it. Glenn Beck did and a couple of others but not much.

It was very racist but there's a clear double standard. Liberals can say anything, think anything and do anything and they are never called out for it. Conservatives cannot do anything without ridicule.

Words can indeed be racist. Look at what happened to Trent Lott after he made an innocent toast to Strom Thurmond on his 100th birthday--and his remarks weren't even vaguely racial in meaning. But the Left usually always ducks and covers for its cronies. The double standard is in play when it comes to Conservatives.

That being said, was it a big deal? Not really. People make too much of things like this.

Matthews meant it as a compliment although I am sure that if a Republican said it they would bring out the race card.

Being 'politically correct' has gotten so bad that even someone like you has to bring up the race card.

Lets get over it! It has gotten so bad that now the words racial and racist don't have much meaning anymore except to try and discredit people. It is stupid and it is dangerous. And it divides Americans. Which is why it is dangerous.

WORDS can't be racist. It's the INTENT behind them that makes them racist or not. And, that's the difference here. Chris Matthews meant it as a compliment, and he was just idiot enough to use those words.

He meant no ill with it. I wish all of us would get so enlightened and turn away from thinking of People in terms of Race rather than just Human Beings.

if you listen to him and his huge support for Obama you would know he is not racist -- it was a dumb comment but not racist
